2015 Carignane

New California winemakers have recently rediscovered this old California variety. Carignane has been prized by vintners since before prohibition for its color, tannin and acidity, all valuable attributes for blending. It can also produce a sizeable crop which may explain why it was once the third most widely planted wine grape in California. Todays winemakers seek out older Carignane vines with low yields, much like the vines at Preston. The goal is to let this ancient Mediterranean varietal show its own character. In the nose there are notes of high toned raspberry and blueberry with a dusty earth quality and a hint of anise. On the palate it is medium bodied with modest tannins and a snappy red cranberry finish.
