2016 Carignane

In 2016 we harvested fruit from our noble old Carignane vines -- planted during the post-prohibition grape boom -- right in the middle of September. Typically this time would be the full swing of a harvest season, but heat spikes and early bud-break combined to make 2016 another early year, and only the Grenache outlasted Carignane on the vines; harvest was finished a week later. Fermentation in an open-top tank lasted just under two weeks, and before October even rolled in the wine was completing its secondary fermentation in neutral French oak and getting ready for 15 months in barrel. The resulting wine is pert and up front, with aromas of mixed berry sprinkled with cinnamon. In the mouth it reflects the shorter growing season by winding around a zippy acidity, like dark berries that were picked slightly tart for a compote rather than lush and sticky for a jam. The charming flavor of red-hot candies has woven its way in over time in barrel and adds an endearing note.
