2017 Carignane

In 2017 we harvested fruit from our stately old Carignane vines -- planted in 1940 during the post-prohibition grape boom -- right in the middle of September. Typically this time would be the full swing of a harvest season, but heat spikes and early bud-break combined to make 2017 an early year, and the Carignane was our pen-ultimate harvest day on the year. After fermenting in one open-top tank, the wine was racked to a blend of French and American oak barrels for 15 months of aging before bottling in Spring 2019. As usual, and especially in a short growing season, the wine is bright and lively, with a nose of pomegranate, tart blueberries, and a hint of vanilla. Fruit abounds in the mouth as well, with more red and blue berries, rhubarb pie, and a clean finish driven more by acidity than tannin.
