In 2016 we harvested 8.1 tons of Grenache on September 19th and 20th, from both our primary block -- planted in the late 1970s and grafted to Grenache somewhere around 1990 -- and, for the first time, its younger offspring: a budwood selection of the best-looking vines from the first block, grafted in early 2015 onto what was previously Marsanne. Crop levels were moderate, and a relatively mild growing season led to even ripening and extended hang time. The resulting wine is spicy and complex, with aromas of allspice and Ceylon cinnamon (think Red-Hot candies) vying for prominence with the red berry fruit typical to our site. In the mouth, flavors of stewed strawberries and Mexican chocolate hit deeper notes than previous vintages, giving way to a delicate grip on the finish.
