2016 L. Preston
A classic blend in the Southern Rhone style; Syrah (at 55%) seems to give us the base here in Dry Creek that Grenache does for those in the Old World. Each grape is fermented separately at harvest, then aged until just before the next harvest on its own. At that point, graduated cylinders, beakers and pipettes all come out, notebook pages are stained purple, the wines are studied and discussed until a blend is produced -- on paper, at least. From there, barrels are unstacked, racked to tank in their proportion, and then returned to age until a winter bottling. The 2016 L. Preston reflects not only that human process but also captures the year it was grown. Brambly blackberry, ripe plums are part of the complex aromas, but seem to take a back seat to spicy notes of black pepper and a note of fresh leather. In the mouth the wine is dense and tightly wound, boasting a beautiful, supple texture and packed with enough flavor to slowly reveal its complexities over the coming decade and beyond.
