2018 L. Preston
Built for the long haul but quite enjoyable in its youth, the 2018 L. Preston is filled with layers of flavor tightly wound around a dense core of fruit, spice and earth. New in 2018 was the addition of 500L puncheons for aging the Grenache, Cinsaut and some of the Mourvèdre. These larger format barrels help keep these components fresher during their time in the cellar, resulting in more focus and precision to the wine. Dark berries, baking spices, and violets make for a lively nose, complemented by hints of smoked meat and some black pepper. Ripe raspberry and huckleberry flavors open on the palate, and a graphite, stony minerality emerges quickly and brings exciting energy to the wine. The finish is not shy filled with fine grained tannins that call for pairing with meats and cheese now but will protect and add life to this stately red wine.
