2019 L. Preston
In 2018 we took a literal chainsaw to one of our Syrah blocks, cutting off the heads and grafting them to some lesser-known varieties weve been experimenting with, some to great success. With less Syrah on hand, you may have noticed the blend shifting in the L. Preston. Its always been a fairly accurate reflection, percentage-wise, of the red Rhone grapes we grow. Our new vineyard makeup is allowing the other grapes to play a more prominent role, with more Grenache & Cinsaut bringing juicy, vibrant fruitiness to the higher register and Mourvedre adding length and depth underneath. An aside, though: the process of assembling the wine is more complex and tooth-staining its now more of a synergy of equals and less of a supporting act for the Syrah. The 2019 L. Preston Red is ready to drink out of the gate, with complex aromatics of mulberry, plum, licorice, pepper and fresh leather. The wine is sleek and alluring in the mouth, carried by Grenache notes of stewed ripe strawberries and finishing with sweet, resolved tannin. GH
