Our stately block of Mourvedre was planted in 1988 on a trellised plot of benchland, perched just above Peña creek. After almost thirty years, the vines were in need of a little extra attention, so in winter 2016 we began a two year project to rejuvenate the block: sawing off dead arms and laying canes down to become the new ones, re-planting missing vines, and pruning for new shoot positions where old ones had died off. The hard work paid off immediately, and in mid-September of 2017 we harvested a healthy crop of beautiful, dark purple clusters. After a twenty-day fermentation and about 16 months in neutral oak, the resulting wine is a classic Mourvedre and makes a great case for why we think its such a perfect fit on our estate. Aromas of currants and dark berries mix with dried tobacco, followed by flavors of plum flesh, baking spices and a signature smoothness to the finish.
