Harvest 2018 came in hot -- both in temperature and in pace -- with different blocks from the vineyard coming off the board daily through September. But once wed picked about 200 of our 223 total tons and only a few blocks remained, an early season storm swung down from the northern Pacific and hung out for the entire first week of October. Harvest ceased for 2 weeks, and when we returned to pick the Mourvedre, the scene had changed dramatically: the sun rose at 7:00, not 6:00, and the vibrant green of the grape leaves had been replaced by grass sprouting from rain-softened soil. Its a now-trite phrase, but the extended hang-time seems to have unlocked a complexity in the Mourvedre that has been elusive in other year. The 2018 is aromatically bright, with notes of red fruit and plum, but underpinned subtly by notes of game and leather. Crunchy mid palate tannin carries a lively mouth, with plum flavors countered by herbal notes of garrigue and mint. An exciting wine: we expect a lengthy, joyous life for this one.
