2023 Mourvedre
The 2022 and 2023 growing seasons could not have been more different, especially at harvest-time. The former was marked by a searing, unprecedented heat wave that thrust anxiety and near-hysteria into picking decisions for over two weeks as ripeness and sunburn levels skyrocketed. 2023, on the other hand, was serene and temperate; winemakers luxuriated in the ability to wait patiently for full and even physiological ripeness of the fruit without it being outpaced by sugar (and alcohol) levels.
It seems to me that no wine of ours exemplifies this distinction more than the Mourvedre. The 2022 was intense and uniquely concentrated; a burst of fruit, sunshine, and sappy sweetness so fervent that thoughts of length and complexity simply didnt enter the mind. The 2023 a more complete wine, to be clear arrives with a slower pace, and cooler temperature. Wide-ranging aromas of minty plum, pomegranate, cracked pepper, and forest floor are subtle at first but seem to deepen and expand the more they are investigated. The wine then becomes legitimately attention-grabbing in the mouth, with a refined and commanding structure overarching flavors of dried cherry and orange peel, plum flesh, game and earth. This interactive and though-provoking wine is surely the best Mourvedre we have produced in many years, if not ever. GH
