2021 Nero d'Avola

Inspired by Arianna Occhipinti, a woman whose fearlessness and quiet confidence are matched only by her natural instinct for winegrowing, we came out of the gate with a bold plan for the first vintage of our Nero dAvola planting, and have been rewarded with an exciting, singularly expressive wine. Picked at peak ripeness with an eye-popping level of acidity, the grapes were de-stemmed to an open-top tank and left to macerate for over 40 days, then pressed off long after the cap had sunk back down into the wine. Because the low pH adds a protective element, we surmised that the wine could brave the elements of our oldest tank, the wooden uprights that stand sentry-like behind the jug station (and had not been filled for 15 years). Bottled thusly without the distracting influence of oak, the resulting wine is pure and ethereal. Primary aromas of dark cherry and vibrant raspberry are lifted by tertiary notes of dried orange peel, rose petal and licorice. The bright acidity shows in the mouth, with red berry, forest grapes, and a hint of wet tobacco flavors on the way to a quenching finish.
