2023 Nero d'Avola
Our Nero dAvola project is one of the most exciting recent developments in the vineyard and winery, and were so grateful that what began as an experiment has blossomed into a captivating and delicious new way to express our land.
A refreshingly cool growing year in 2023 made for an easygoing year for most wines during harvest time, but the Nero proved a little trickier: what to do with a high-acid grape youve planted to be resilient in a warming climate when that years climate is not all that warm?! For starters, our protocol of extended time on the skins 53 days for the 2023 was integral in bringing smoothness and balance to the wine, as well as allowing exciting aromatic compounds to develop. We then aged the wine a little longer in the cellar and bottle, releasing it this summer as it blossoms into its ever-expressive self.
Bright, vibrant aromas of red raspberry, pomegranate and cherry are framed by notes of dried orange peel, rose petal, and red licorice. In the mouth, tangy blood orange and exotic spices weave into the red-fruited core. This exciting, energetic wine should prove to be incredibly food-friendly and versatile, and we look forward to hearing about what you pair it with. -GH
