2016 VZN1 Zinfandel

One of five plantings of Zinfandel on the property, wines from block VZN1 have stood out for their ability to balance great complexity and finesse (seriousness) with Zinfandels typical exuberance and charm (fun). In 2011 we decided to bottle the wine from this block on its own, and the 2016 vintage is a perfect example of why. Abundant black, blue, and red berries mix with aromas we know from baking bread perhaps mixed berry scone would be a good catchall descriptor with hints of white pepper that provide lift. In the mouth the wine is ample, weighty and round, but shows restraint; its not an over-the-top Zin. A touch of cinnamon spice precedes a noticeably long finish, with, as our Cellarmaster Chris keenly noted, just enough tannin to stand up to a ribeye.
